How to Do NYC in Two Days

Hello all! I'm back today as your travel guide. ;) As many of you know we are nuts about New York City -- we've been there countless times and love it so much we got married there. I get so many emails about our recommendations on places to stay and things to do, so I thought I'd put it all one spot for you. Lately we've been taking friends with us and showing them our favorite spots in the city -- that's what we did this past weekend. We go for two nights, two days (it spans three days but the total time there is about 48 hours). We aren't typical "plan" people -- when it's just us we just go and explore. But to see as much as possible this is a good list! You won't see even a tiny percentage of this vast city in 48 hours, but this is a list of the must do's for us. They are a mix of shopping, tourist spots and our favorite places to eat. Getting from the airport to the city The easiest way is to take a cab. It will be anywhere from $40 an...

Fabric and Pillow Cover Sale!

Hey all! Hope your weekend was wonderful! We were out of town this weekend for a quick trip to NYC and it was a much needed break. We had a blast! As I mentioned last week, I've been busy working on purging our whole house . It's a process I thought would maybe take a few weeks and it's been spread over about seven months. :) I'm working on the craft room now because it will be torn apart in about a week when we have the new floors installed in there. Whoohoo! I have so many cute fabrics that I've used (and some I haven't used) that I don't need anymore. There's something about fabric -- I just hate to give it away, especially when I've shared some of these with you over the years. So as I've done in the past, I'm listing them for sale here for some of you to enjoy.  If you are interested in any of these fabrics or pillow covers here is the process:  1. Email me (thriftydecorchick (at) gmail (dot) com) with the name I put under the fabric as ...

Simplifying the Art on the Walls

Hello all! Hope you've had a great week and have a wonderful weekend planned! I'm back with a quick post about some changes I made to a couple walls in the house. I LOVE the new art so wanted to share it with you. :) I've been busy purging the house (see my latest progress here ) and along the way I can't help but see butterflies and switch gears to smaller projects around the house. It slows me down but I can't resist the pull of getting these easy projects done.  A couple of them involve hanging some art I've purchased over the past few weeks. When we took a wall down in our family room a couple years ago there was one wall I wasn't sure what to do with by the end of the renovation. I ended up hanging some of our son's art to fill it: I knew they wouldn't stay forever but I wanted to wait till I found exactly what felt right.  It took a couple years but I found it while walking through Hobby Lobby a couple weeks ago:  Watercolors really speak to m...

Simple and Pretty Craft Organization

Hello all! I have to tell you -- I am so excited about the upcoming changes to the loft/craft room. It will be my summer project this year. I'm determined not to be a sloth this time. :)  This is how it looks now:  (You can see how I made that DIY craft table here -- it was a super simple project and is fantastic storage!) What you can't tell from this photo is that the carpet is disgusting. Seriously, it grosses me out. It's time for it to go and in a couple weeks it will be replaced with hardwood floors like we have throughout most of the house.  Before that happens I have a lot of work to do -- purge everything for one (hoping that will happen today) and then start removing all of the base and window trim in the room. I'm going to use this opportunity to upgrade our tiny baseboards in that room to something taller. While I'm at it I'll be adding my craftsman style trim to all of the doors and windows -- and I'm already planning to hire out the paintin...

Getting Rid of ALL THE THINGS

Hi there! I hope you and a wonderful Mother's Day weekend! We took a quick trip out to Cincinnati for the day to visit IKEA and Kings Island. We had a blast! Not gonna lie -- I felt like I deserved a day of fun because I've been working my butt off on clearing the crap out of my house. Or decrapification as I like to say. :) I've been focused on the basement because it has the most to go through and we need to get that whole level organized before tackling the floors. We are pulling out all of the carpet and adding this flooring but I couldn't even fathom tackling that before I went through everything. Most of our storage space is in the basement -- when we finished it years back I kept two spots as storage rooms. One is for the games and bigger toys and one is for my stuff. But first I went through smaller pieces like this vintage cabinet we use for puzzles: I got rid of the baby puzzles (sniff) and kept the newer ones we have yet to put together:  And a cat. There...
